2026 Class Series
Small Stories is a two day hands‑on workshop for Australian miniature painters who want to move beyond a technique-only approach and into storytelling, using only paint and intentional choices. The emphasis is on what you can do with minimal conversions, sculpted add‑ons and elaborate bases. The purpose of the class is to explore narrative storytelling on a miniature purely with paint and some inspiration.
Who is it for and what should I expect?
My teaching style is relaxed and approachable - expect tangents, bad puns and some attendant-led discussions paired with an irreverent but creative approach to high level miniature painting. This class is aimed at experienced miniature painters wanting to break out of formulaic tabletop styles, as well as display painters looking to learn to enhance their creations with a strong sense of story.
What the class covers
-
Planning for the chronically disorganised: Creating a simple plan that is easy to stick to while answering the questions that you may encounter throughout the process of the project.
-
Choosing your foundations: how to pick a model that supports a story, or how to draw out a story from your model.
-
Composition: guiding the viewer’s eye with focal points and contrast
-
Intentional detail: weaponising references and resources towards additional elements such as surface finish, texture and painted freehand details
-
Atmosphere and setting a scene: Using subtle context clues in colour, value, and intensity to immerse the subject in a time, place and purpose.
-
Practical advice: step‑by‑step guidance on applying narrative choices directly onto your miniature
-
Critical & constructive feedback: How to self-assess and realign your projects with your goal when you feel lost & lots more...
What you get:
-
A Full 50+ page PDF booklet to keep
-
A miniature to paint over the workshop (Bust TBA, depending on location)
-
2 full days listening to Nat (approx. 70% class, 20% tangents, 10% coffee breaks, probably some impulsive pet picture galleries)
Capacity:
The class is capped at 15 people to allow adequate time to teach, interact, and spend a reasonable amount of time split between the workshop content and hands-on feedback.
Costs:
$300 AUD per person
This cost is based off an amount that covers my airfares, travel, room hire & accommodation as necessary, with anything else going toward helping to pay for the time taken developing the content & resources.
Complementary tickets for community groups:
If you are a community group or organisation that would like to organise a class, I am more than happy to provide additional ‘guild/club/collective/organisation sponsored’ tickets. If 12 people are confirmed and paid, I am happy to provide 3x additional tickets at no cost to be handed out at the discretion of the organisers. This should ideally enable attendance of organisers or those who financially would not have been able to attend.
Organisers are welcome to sit in on the class at no cost if they are happy to assist with logistics and providing learning support on the workshop days for those attending.
